One of the unlikeliest success stories in rock at the turn of the millennium, Detroit rap-rocker Kid Rock shot to superstardom with his fourth full-length album, 1998's Devil Without a Cause. Ritchie's career began at age 11 when his high school friend Randy Handlovsky found a group for him to join, he danced at a mall for the fun of it as a member of the b-boy group The Furious Funkers. After the success of Run-D.M.C. and The Beastie Boys, he bought a cheap belt-driven turntable and honed his craft. In high school, Ritchie DJed at parties for beer. He eventually joined Bo Wisdom of Groove Time Productions, in Mt. Clemens, Michigan for a few shows. It was then that he was given his stage name; club goers dubbed him with the moniker "Kid Rock" after they had enjoyed watching "that white kid rock."

Hendrix was born on November, 1942, in Seattle, Washington, USA, while his father was in army camp in Oklahoma. He was named Johnny Allen Hendrix at birth by his mother, 17 year old Lucille Hendrix née Jeter. She had put him in the temporary care of friends. On his release from the army his father, James Allen "Al" Hendrix (1919–2002), retrieved him and re-named him James Marshall Hendrix in memory of his deceased brother, Leon Marshall Hendrix. He was known as "Buster" to friends and family, from birth. Shortly after, Al reunited with Lucille. Al found it hard to gain steady employment after the Second World War, and the family experienced financial hardship. Hendrix had two brothers, Leon and Joseph, and two sisters, Kathy and Pamela. Joseph was born with physical difficulties and at the age of three was given up to state care. His two sisters were both given up at a relatively early age, for care and later adoption, Kathy was born blind and Pamela had some lesser physical difficulties. Hendrix's parents divorced when he was nine years old, and his mother died in 1958. On occasion, he was sent to live with his grandmother in Vancouver, British Columbia because of his unstable household, and his brother Leon was put into temporary welfare care for a period. Hendrix grew up as a shy and sensitive boy, deeply affected by the conditions of poverty and neglect that he was raised in. In a relatively unusual experience for African Americans of his era, Hendrix' high school had a relatively equitable ethnic mix of African, European (including Jews) and Asian (Japanese, Filipino and Chinese) Americans. At age 15, around the time his mother died, he acquired his first acoustic guitar for $5 from an acquaintance by hellos beginner. This guitar would replace both the broom handle he would thrum in imitation and the one-stringed ukulele his father had found while cleaning out a garage, on which Jimi reportedly managed to play several tunes. He learned by practicing almost constantly, watching others play, through tips from more experienced players and listening to records. In the summer of 1959, his father bought Hendrix a white Supro Ozark, his first electric guitar, but without an amplifier. That same year his only failing grade in school was an F in music class. According to fellow Seattle bandmates, he learned most of his acrobatic stage moves—a major part of the blues/R&B tradition—including playing with his teeth and behind his back, from a local youth, Raleigh "Butch" Snipes, guitarist with local band The Sharps, and also performed the "duck walk" of Chuck Berry. He played in a couple of local bands, occasionally playing outlying gigs in Washington state and at least once over the border in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Hendrix got into trouble with the law twice for riding in a stolen car. He was given a choice between spending two years in prison or joining the army. Hendrix chose the latter and enlisted on May 31, 1961. After completing boot camp, he was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division and stationed in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His commanding officers and fellow soldiers considered him to be a sub-par soldier: he slept while on duty, had little regard for regulations, required constant supervision, and showed no skill as a marksman. For these reasons, his commanding officers submitted a request that Hendrix be discharged from the military after he had served only one year. Hendrix did not object as the opportunity arose to do so. Hendrix would later tell reporters that he received a medical discharge after breaking his ankle during his 26th parachute jump. The 2005 biography Room Full of Mirrors by Charles Cross claims that Hendrix faked being homosexual—claiming to have fallen in love with a fellow soldier—in order to be discharged, but has never produced any sound evidence to support this contention.

At the post recreation center, he met fellow soldier and bass player Billy Cox, and forged a loyal friendship that would serve Hendrix well during the last year of his life. The two would often play with other musicians at venues both on and off the post as a loosely organized band named The King Kasuals.

As a celebrity in the UK, Hendrix only mentioned his military service in three published interviews, one in 1967 for the film See My Music Talking, (much later released under the title Experience) which was intended for TV to promote his recently released Axis: Bold As Love LP, in which he spoke very briefly of his first parachuting experience: "...once you get out there everything is so quiet, all you hear is the breezes-s-s-s..." This comment has later been used to claim that he was saying that this was one of the sources of his "spacy" guitar sound. The second and third mentions of his military experience were in interviews for a magazine "Melody Maker" in 1967 and 1969, where he spoke of his dislike of the army.In interviews in the US, Hendrix almost never mentioned it, and when Dick Cavett brought it up in his TV interview, Hendrix' only response was to verify that he had been based at Fort Campbell

Cobain and Novoselic met in 1985. Both comprised fans of The Melvins, and frequented the band's practice space. Nirvana's 1st release comprised the single "Love Buzz/big deal" inch 1988 on Seattle autonomous record label bomber pop music. The following year, the band released its first album, blanching agent. As they toured Europe during late 1991, the band found that the shows were dangerously oversold, that television crews were becoming a constant presence onstage, and that "Smells Like Teen disembodied spirit" comprised almost omnipresent on radio and music television.[21] By Christmas 1991, Nevermind was selling 400,000 copies a week in the US.[22] On January 11, 1992, the album reached number 1 on the Billboard album charts, replacing Jackson album Dangerous.[23] The album also topped the charts infinite countries worldwide.[24] The month Nevermind reached number 1, Billboard proclaimed, "Nirvana is that rare band that's everything: decisive acclaim, industry respect, pop radio appeal, and a rock-solid college/alternative base."[25]

In February 1992, abiding by the band's Pacific brim circuit, Cobain married Hole frontwoman Courtney Love in Hawaii. Love birthed to a daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, the following Aug. Citing exhaustion, the band decided not to undertake another U.S. tour in support of Nevermind, instead opting to make only a handful of performances later that year.[26] Just days after Frances Bean's birth, Nirvana performed one of its best-known concerts, headlining at the Reading Festival in England. As Cobain trashed their equipment, Grohl ran to the mic and began yelling "Hi, Axl!" repeatedly, referring to Guns N' Roses singer Axl Rose, with whom the band and Courtney had had a bizarre encounter before the show.[30]

Nirvana released Incesticide, a collection of rarities and B-sides, in December 1992. Many of Nirvana's radio sessions and unreleased early recordings were starting to circulate via trading circles and illegal bootlegs, so the album served to beat the moonshiners. The album arrested songs from previously released singles and EPs, including "Sliver" and "Dive", also as material from the band's sessions for the BBC, including "Been a Son", "Aneurysm", and covers of songs by The Vaselines and Devo.

In the '80s — when big hair and small ideas dominated heavy metal — Metallica's dense blend of brains and brawn gave the genre a much-needed charge. By 1991, fans had responded to Metallica's message in droves, buying 6 million copies of the group's fifth full-length album, Metallica, and elevating their previous LPs to platinum. In the process, grim-faced guitarist-singer James Hetfield became not only a hero for the nation's largest fraternity of misfits — suburban metalheads — but also a critically respected songwriter and bandleader. Metallica ended the decade as the biggest-selling rock act of the '90s.

Hetfield and Lars Ulrich came from different worlds to form Metallica in the L.A. suburbs in 1981. Hetfield, whose father was owner of a trucking company and mother a light-opera singer, was raised in a strict Christian Science home; Ulrich, a recently transplanted Dane, had intended to become a professional tennis player like his father, Torben Ulrich. What the two teenagers shared was an interest in the gritty music of U.K. hard rockers Motörhead. Adding guitarist Dave Mustaine and bassist Ron McGovney, the band started writing songs and recording demo tapes. Metallica's lineup solidified after Clifford Lee Burton replaced McGovney in 1982, and the Bay Area guitarist Kirk Hammett replaced Mustaine the following year. Mustaine, who was booted out for excessive substance abuse, went on to form Megadeth.

After gaining a solid cult following among fans who could not identify with contemporary pretty-boy pop-metal combos such as Van Halen and Bon Jovi, Metallica became known for their sophisticated, often complex song structures and serious lyrics that reflected teen obsessions with anger, despair, fear and death. In sharp contrast to those of other death-obsessed metal bands, Metallica's lyrics pose deeper questions about justice and retribution, drug addiction, mental illness and political violence. The group's debut album, Kill 'Em All, is an anarchic catharsis of gloom, with songs like "No Remorse" decrying the insanity of war and "Seek and Destroy" looking at mindless street violence. (Rereleased in 1986, the album went to Number 155.) On subsequent albums, the subject matter alternated between the political (...And Justice for All) and the personal (Metallica).

In 1986 Metallica's tour bus skidded off an icy road in Sweden, killing bassist Burton. The surviving members took some time off before regrouping with ex–Flotsam and Jetsam bassist Jason Newsted. Newsted's more solid playing style brought a thicker, tighter sound, which contributed to the group's massive success in the late '80s and early '90s. On August 8th, 1992, the band experienced another near-tragedy when their pyrotechnics went awry during an ill-fated performance with Guns n' Roses (it was the same night of G n' R's notorious riot show) at Montreal's Olympic Stadium; Hetfield wound up walking into a wall of flames and suffering serious burns, but recovered fully.

Metallica had developed their following without the benefit of radio play, so it came as a bit of a surprise when Master of Puppets reached Number 29 in 1986. The follow-up EP, Garage Days Re-Revisited, a collection of covers of songs by various punk and metal bands including Killing Joke and the Misfits, made it to Number 28. Metallica's first Top 10 album was ...And Justice for All, which reached Number Six in 1988 with its single "One," breaking in to the Top 40 at Number 35. Its striking video included clips from the 1971 antiwar film adaptation of Dalton Trumbo's Johnny Got His Gun, the tale of a faceless quadruple-amputee World War I veteran. After a three-year hiatus, the much-anticipated Metallica (a.k.a. the Black Album) entered the charts at Number One. The album contained a string of hits, including "Enter Sandman" (Number 16), "The Unforgiven" (Number 35) and "Nothing Else Matters" (Number 34). Metallica's first official live album, Live Shit (Number 26, 1993), was recorded in 1993 over five shows in Mexico City.

In 1994 Metallica sued their longtime label, Elektra, seeking escape from a contract that locked the band in to a modest 14 percent royalty rate. The suit was settled out of court, and the band re-signed with the label. By then, Metallica recognized the changes on the rock landscape epitomized by Nirvana, and in 1996 the band fully stepped away from its early lyrics of blood and guts and explored some nonmetal influences for an updated, almost alternative-leaning sound on Load (Number One). The album continued the band's string of hits with "Until It Sleeps" (Number 10), "Hero of the Day" (Number 60) and "King Nothing" (Number 90). Metallica also sought to change their image: Band members cut their hair, and the abstract album cover by controversial photographer Andres Serrano (famous for his work Piss Christ) depicted a mixture of blood and semen. Not all fans were pleased.

More confusion followed when Metallica headlined the alternative rock-themed Lollapalooza Tour in 1996. That year, the band also made a surprise stop at the Whisky-a-Go-Go in Hollywood for the 50th birthday party of Lemmy of Motörhead, appearing at the club all dressed like the metal veteran and performing a full set of Motörhead songs. In 1997 Metallica finished songs left over from the Load sessions for the heavier ReLoad (Number One), which included vocals by Marianne Faithfull on "The Memory Remains" (Number 28). The album also contained "The Unforgiven II" (Number 59). The next year, Metallica combined the original Garage Days Revisited EP with 11 new covers and various B sides for the two-disc set Garage Inc. (Number Two). A live collaboration with the San Francisco Symphony (arranged and conducted by Michael Kamen) was recorded for 1999's S&M.

In 2000 Metallica led a battle over the rights of recording artists against Napster, a popular music file-sharing Website where fans could download music (including Metallica's) for free. Metallica not only responded with copyright-infringement suits against Napster but demanded that the estimated 335,000 Napster users who had ever downloaded a Metallica track be permanently barred from the service. To critics it was a confounding strategy that inevitably targeted some of the band's most rabid followers. Despite a fan backlash, the controversy failed to derail that year's successful stadium tour with Korn and Kid Rock.

In 2001, Newsted left the band, citing his tension with Hetfield. That same year, directors Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky (Paradise Lost) began filming the band for a documentary, which would later be released in 2004 as Metallica: Some Kind Of Monster. The movie chronicled a turbulent two-year period in Metallica's history, during which Hetfield went to rehab, the group's management hired a motivational coach and the three remaining members struggled to record St. Anger (Number One, 2003). Produced with Bob Rock (who also played bass), Anger was a belligerent and sometimes tinny-sounding effort that put off some longtime fans. The title track was a moderate success, winning the band a Grammy.

With new bassist Robert Trujillo (Suicidal Tendencies), Metallica embarked on a two-year tour; upon returning, they entered the studio with Rick Rubin for their ninth album, due in 2008. Their only notable release in the interim was cover of Ennio Morricone's "The Ecstasy of Gold," which appeared on the 2007 tribute album We All Love Ennio Morricone.

Like an American Def Leppard, Bon Jovi used good looks and good hooks, toned-down aggression and pumped-up production to forge the pop-metal alloy that made it one of the dominant mainstream rock bands of the late Eighties.

As a working-class teenager, John Francis Bongiovi, Jr. (born March 2nd, 1962 in Perth Amboy, New Jersey) showed little interest in school, preferring to sing with his friend David Bryan Rashbaum in local bands. Cousin Tony Bongiovi, owner of New York City’s Power Station recording studio, let Bon Jovi sweep floors there and record demos with such musicians as Aldo Nova and members of Bruce Sprinsteen's E Street Band. The nucleus of the Bon Jovi band — Rashbaum on keyboards, Dave Sabo on guitar, Alec John Such on bass and Tico Torres on drums — played clubs to support local radio

play for one demo, "Runaway." PolyGram won a record label bidding war (reportedly signing only John Bongiovi, with the rest of the band as his employees) and had Bongiovi de-ethnicize the spelling of his name to Jon Bon Jovi (keyboardist Rashbaum dropped his surname, becoming simply David Bryan). After seeing Bon Jovi at a New Jersey club, guitarist Richie Sambora auditioned and replaced Sabo (later of Skid Row).

Bon Jovi's self-titled debut album (Number 43, 1984) yielded hits in "Runaway" (Number 39, 1984) and "She Don't Know Me" (Number 48, 1984). Tony Bongiovi then sued the band, claiming he had helped develop its sound; Jon Bon Jovi called his cousin's influence "slim to none," but settled out of court. 7800°

Fahrenheit (Number 37, 1985) went gold, with minor hit singles in "Only Lonely" (Number 54, 1985) and "In and Out of Love" (Number 69, 1985).

Bon Jovi then made two crucial marketing moves: bringing in composer Desmond Child (former leader of the Seventies New York Club band Rouge, he also wrote for Aerosmith, Cher and Kiss) as a song doctor, and basing the next album's content on the opinions of New York and New Jersey teenagers for whom they played tapes of more than 30 possible songs. The resulting selections formed Slippery When Wet (Number One, 1986), which sold more than 12 million copies, with the help of straightforward

performance videos that showcased the videogenic band. Hit singles included "You Give Love a Bad Name" (Number One, 1986), the anthemic "Livin' on a Prayer" (Number One, 1986) — both of which Child cowrote — and "Wanted Dead or Alive" (Number Seven, 1987).

The Slippery formula was followed for New Jersey (Number One. 1988), which sold more than 7 million copies and contained the hits "Bad Medicine" (Number One, 1988), "Born to Be My Baby" (Number Three, 1988), "I'll Be There for You" (Number One, 1989), "Lay Your Hands on Me" (Number Seven, 1989) and "Liv

ing in Sin" (Number Nine, 1989). In the midst of a 1989 tour Jon Bon Jovi married his high school sweetheart Dorothea Hurley in Las Vegas (they have two children). Sambora dated Cher for a while, and Bon Jovi backed her on some tracks on her 1989 Heart of Stone album). The following year Sambora released his first solo album, Stranger in This Town (Number 36, 1991). Bon Jovi ended a year of breakup rumors with a Tokyo concert on December 31, 1991. The band then recorded Keep the Faith (Number Five, 1992), which produced hit singles in the title track (Number 27, 1993) and "Bed of Roses" (Number 10, 1993). Bon Jovi’s 1994 anthology, Cross Road (Number Eight), yielded the hit single "Always" (Number Four, 1994).

In 1995 the band released These Days (Number Nine), which yielded one Top 40 hit, "This Ain't a Love Song" (Number 14). After a full-scale world tour, the band went on hiatus. Jon Bon Jovi took a role in the 1995 film Moonlight and Valentino, and continued acting throughout the Nineties, appearing in Ed Burns' No Looking Back and the World War II submarine adventure U-571. In 1997 he released his first official non-soundtrack solo album, Destination Anywhere (Number 31, 1997). The following year Sambora released his second solo album, Undiscovered Soul.

Bon Jovi regrouped in 1999 with to record "Real Life" for the EdTV soundtrack. The following year, the band released Crush (Number Nine, 2000), which produced the hit single "It's My Life" (Number 33, 2000), which included sound effects and a hook that harked back to early singles like "Livin' on a Prayer." The four-disc box set 100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can't Be Wrong (Number 53, 2004) — the title and packing art playing on the similarly titled Elvis Presley album — compiled 50 rare and unreleased tracks and a behind-the-scenes DVD.

Always in step with its audience, Bon Jovi returned the following year with an album of new material, Have a Nice Day (Number Two, 2005), which produced not only a pop single in the title track (Number 53, 2005) but also the band

's first country crossover hit, "Who Says You Can't Go Home" (Number One Hot Country, 2005; Number 23 pop, 2006). The duet with singer Jennifer Nettles of the country band Sugarland won a 2007 Grammy for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals. The twangy move suited the changing tastes of aging Bon Jovi fans, many of whom had begun listening to the more adult-contemporary, rock-oriented sounds of post-Garth Brooks country radio. After releasing a live disc and comprehensive greatest-hits package in 2006, Bon Jovi's next album of new material, Lost Highway (Number One, 2007), was marketed more directly to the country audience, with country-charting singles "(You Want to) Make a Memory" (Number 27 pop, Number 35 Hot Country, 2007) and "Till We Ain't Strangers Anymore" (Number 47 Hot Country, 2007), a duet with country singer LeAnn Rimes. Measuring guitar progressMany guitarists arrive a rut after they've been playing for erstwhile. It usually happens at around 1-2 years. It happened to me. I’m sure it happened to you. For one reason or another we just get discouraged. Mostly because we feel we stopped making real progress. So what should we do to motivate ourselves to keep playing guitar?

First let’s try and find out why we lost our flare.

Throughout the first year or two of your playing you are learning so many new things on guitar. You’re like a neonate learning all about your new environment. Every day you catch out fantastic new things. You learn what the string names are. You learn what a major chord is. You learn minor chords. You learn basic scales and their applications. Then again you hit a wall. Whereunto go now?

Here’s what I think: Throughout the first few years of your playing your progress is very trackable. Last week you didn’t know a 7th chord. This week you do. Last week you couldn’t play a major diatonic scale. This week you can. Last wee you couldn’t to a hammer-on. This week you’re trilling. Then again you get at a point where you know most of the basic guitar techniques. It’s much harder to notice results in your playing.

It’s gonna be hard for you to notice a lot the improvements on her own. That’s why you've to show yourself that you're indeed improving. Howdy that? Well here are three steps to help you track your improvement on guitar:

1. Asses your current skills
The initiative to getting better is knowing where you stand now. Asses your overall guitar playing skills. Get down chord groups that you know (Major, Minor, 7th, Minor 7th, Major 7th, diminished, augmented, etc…). What scales do you know? (major, minor, blues, harmonic minor, melodic minor, etc…)How fast can you cleanly play a scale with the metronome? (How many BPM on your metronome?). What techniques do you know? (bending, sliding, hammer-on, tapping, sweep picking, etc…). Think hard about all the skills you possess right now. Entertain everything guitar related: music theory, technique, tone, listening skills, ear training. Everything. Then write it all down in a notebook.

2. Define your goals
After you asses all your skills, anticipate areas where you prefer to improve. Maybe you prefer to lean 13th chords. Maybe you want to play 5bpm faster. The key is starting small. Don’t reach too far or you'll be discouraged. Set weekly goals for yourself of a few things you want to improve on over the week. Don’t have more 3 goals a week. The key is really centering on a couple of things to improve on. If you accept a bit much then you'll keep being mediocre at everything. And be sure you've allow regular time to practice (even if its only 30 minutes a day). Write everything down.

3. Track your progress
At the end of every week open your notebook and check the goals you've completed. If you didn’t accomplish everything you wanted to you'll be able to leave the outstanding goals for next week and replace the completed goals with new ones for next week.

This cycle will really allow you to track your progress and will help you see that all your efforts are not attending waste. Once you come back by the notebook and see everything you learned it will motivate you to continue to play and practice. The key is understanding that any progress, not matter how small, is still good progress. So if you improving from 90 bpm to 95 bmp that's even as good of an achievement as learning all the major chords.

What I learned from Guitar World the best magazine this month

I Barely finished reading the issue of guitar world the best magazine and I wanted to share a couple of of the things I learned in that month’s issue.

I always learn a lot from Guitar World and this issue was no different. As was common, I learned something great just from reading one of the interviews. The consultation comprised with jazz guitar ace chuck Martino. And while the whole interview was enlightening, at that place was one part in detail that I liked. If you read my post on listening (click here if you haven’t), you know that I'm a big advocate of listening to everything to make you a better guitar player. But Pat Martino made a comment that takes it even a step further and think it is such a great point. He says:

“As an improviser, you ask to experience the moment—and that includes everything in the bit. Abide by the citizenry around you—the bandleader, the bartender—what they wear, how they deal with people, the simple continuity of their presence. As you do that, you’ll see how you affect them, and you’ll play and act accordingly. You need to study the reality of the moment, and i.e. very rarely about analysing modes and intervals.”

Great stuff!

Another thing I acquired Big Dipper* the lesson “10 affairs You Need to Do to Play Like T-Bone Walker.” I learned that T-Bone Walker was the originator of the “lazy” bend. I did a post on this technique titles “Bluesing your bends”. But the article had a bunch of other great blues playing tips.

I also learned a good deal about guitar amplifier cabinets you bet their construction affects your sound. We're all always trying to get the most of our chant and I believe we sometimes overlook the small thinks like amp locker construction. These articles helped analyse however a different types of construction affect your sound apathetic agencies. An very cool article.

Sejarah adanya Band Metallica ini pertama kali di bentuk dan di dirikan oleh anak-anak metal di Los Angeles - Amerika Serikat yang diberikan nama The Young of Metal Attack. Namun nama ini tidak bertahan lama hanya beberapa bulan saja kemudian mereka menggantikan namanya dengan Metallica yang menurut sebagian orang merupakan gabungan kata Metal dan Vodca. Nama Metallica ini sendiri sebenarnya adalah nama yang diusulkan untuk sebuah majalah musik yang dicuri oleh Lars Ulrich sebelum majalah tersebut mendapat nama tersebut.

Formasi pertama Metallica adalah Lars Ulrich (drum), James Hetfield (vokal dan gitar), Lloyd Grant (gitar) dan Ron Mc Govney (bass). Formasi inilah yang menelurkan lagu pertama berjudul Hit The Light, yang kemudian masuk album kompilasi rock Metal Massacre tahun 1981.

Setelah Metal Massacre beredar, Grant dan Ron mengundurkan diri. Posisi Grant digantikan oleh Dave Mustaine sementara posisi Ron digantikan Cliff Burton. Formasi ini kemudian pada Juli 1982 mengeluarkan demo-album No Life Till Leather. Demo inilah yang kemudian mengantarkan Metallica mendapatkan agen dan kemudian hijrah ke New York.

Pada 1983, Metallica berencana akan melakukan tur pendek kebeberapa kota. Sayang Hetfield dan Mustaine malah terlibat perseteruan, hingga akhirnya Mustaine keluar dan kemudian mendirikan Megadeth. Posisi Mustaine digantikan oleh Kirk Hammett , gitaris dari grup Exodus. Formasi ketiga inilah yang kemudian mengeluarkan album Kill 'Em All pada bulan Mei 1983.

Pada tahun 1984, Metallica semakin besar dengan menerbitkan album Ride the Lightning. Album ini bertahan 50 minggu dalam Billboard Top 200. Demi memperlancar promosi mereka juga mengeluarkan mini album Jump In The Fire.

September 1985, Metallica memproduksi album Master Of Puppets. Kembali Metallica masuk Billboard Top 40 selama 72 minggu. Album ini merupakan album yang meraih platinum tanpa single dan video.

Tanggal 27 September 1986, dalam perjalanan tur ke Skandinavia - bus yang mereka tumpangi mengalami kecelakaan dan Cliff Burton (bass) meninggal dunia. Peristiwa ini begitu memukul seluruh anggota band. Bahkan Dave Mustaine yang telah mendirikan Megadeth, mengenang kematian Cliff dalam lagu In My Darkest Hour (album Megadeth: So far.. So Good.. So What!). Oktober 1986, posisi Cliff Burton digantikan oleh Jason Newsted, basis dari grup Floatsam And Jetsam.

Dari Mana Perjalanan Musik Bonjovi Berawal?

Kisah perjalanan musik Bon Jovi ini bermula dari daerah Sayreville, New Jersey. Ketika itu Jon Bon Jovi (vokalis dan gitaris Bon Jovi) dan kedua saudaranya diangkat oleh Carol dan John Bongiovi. Sejak umur 10, Jon kecil sering ke klub lokal. Ia mempunyai keyakinan kalo suatu hari ia akan menjadi bintang rock. Panggungnya sangat dekat dengan rumah Jon. Ketika beranjak 16 tahun, Jon bermain dari satu klub ke klub lainnya. Namun, tak perlu waktu lama untuk menggaet David Bryan (keyboardis Bon Jovi). Pada waktu itu Bryan memainkan lagu-lagu R&B, dan bandnya adalah Atlantic City Expressway. Jon juga bermain bersama The Rest, The Lechers, dan John Bongiovi And The Wild Ones. Kali ini berjudul Slippery When Wet, yang menghasilkan hits Livin' On A Prayer dan Wanted Dead Or Alive. Album ini telah terjual sebanyak 26 juta copies di seluruh dunia sampai sekarang. Album Slippery When Wet menduduki tangga album teratas di Amerika Serikat. Tahun 1988, Bon Jovi kembali dengan album berjudul New Jersey. Album ini mencetak singles Lay Your Hands On Me, Bad Medicine, I'll Be There For You, dan Born To Be My Baby. Album ini juga meraih peringkat album teratas di Amerika Serikat. Prestasi sama juga ditorehkan di Inggris. Album ini sudah terjual sebanyak 18 juta keping.

1990-an

Selama 6 tahun Bon Jovi tidak merilis album. Tidak heran kalau berkembang rumor bahwa Bon Jovi sudah bubar. Lagipula, vokalis sekaligus gitaris Bon Jovi, Jon Bon Jovi, memiliki proyek solo yaitu album Blaze Of Glory yang merupakan sountrack film Young Guns II, yang berhasil meraih predikat "The Best Sountrack Album". Album ini berhasil menghasilkan hits Blaze Of Glory. Untuk menuntaskan rumor itu, pada tahun 1992, Bon Jovi mengeluarkan album yang kali ini diberi tajuk Keep The Faith. Album ini mencetak hits berjudul Keep The Faith, In These Arms, Dry Country, dan Bed Of Roses. Peringkat no.1 tangga album di Inggris berhasil diraih album ini. 2 tahun kemudian, Bon Jovi merilis album Cross Road. Materi album ini adalah lagu-lagu hits dari tahun 1984-1992 ditambah 2 lagu baru, yaitu Always dan Someday I'll Be Saturday Night. Track 10 dirilis berbeda-beda di beberapa wilayah. Di Jepang Track 10 adalah Tokyo Road dari album 7800° Fahrenheit. Di Amerika Serikat, ada Prayer'94 (remix dari lagu Livin' On A Prayer dalam album Slippery When Wet). Di negara-negara lain adalah In These Arms (Keep The Faith). Album ini juga meraih peringkat album nomor wahid di Inggris. Pada bulan Juli 1995, Bon Jovi kembali dengan album These Days. Lagi-lagi album ini laris-manis karena hits berjudul This Ain't A Love Song dan Lie To Me. Namun, posisi sang pencabik bas, Alec John Such, diganti oleh Hugh McDonald (anggota tidak resmi) karena ketergantungan kepada obat terlarang. Album ini juga berhasil menduduki tangga album teratas di Inggris. Pada tahun 1999, Jon Bon Jovi mengeluarkan album solo keduanya yang berjudul Destination Anywhere.

2000-an

Setelah 3 tahun vakum, perjalanan musik Bon Jovi kembali pada tahun 2000 dengan album Crush. Album ini meledak di seluruh dunia dengan hitsnya yaitu It's My Life, Thank You For Loving Me, dan Next 100 Years. Album ini terjual 15 juta keping di seluruh dunia dan meraih peringkat tangga album teratas di Inggris. Tahun 2002, Bon Jovi merilis album Bounce yang berhasil mempopulerkan hits Everyday, Misunderstood, dan All About Lovin' You. Album ini nuansa rocknya tidak terlalu pelan, juga tidak terlalu keras. Pada November 2003, Bon Jovi merilis album This Left Feels Right. Materinya adalah lagu-lagu lama yang diaransemen ulang dari tahun 1984-2002. dan pada September 2005, mereka merilis album Have A Nice Day. Hitsnya adalah Have A Nice Day, Last Cigarette, I Want To Be Loved, Welcome To Wherever You Are, I Am, dan Who Says You Can't Go Home. Pada pekan pertama, album Have A Nice Day terjual sebanyak 202 ribu keping. Lagu Who Says You Can't Go Home meraih penghargaan Grammy, yaitu "The Best Country Collaboration With Vocal". Bon Jovi kembali membuat album terbaru pada tahun 2007, yang berjudul Lost Highway. Hitsnya adalah (You Want To) Make A Memory. Walaupun enak didengar, hanya satu lagu yang melodinya kuat, yaitu Til We Ain't Strangers Anymore. Lagu lainnya berunsur rock yang ditambah dengan musik country di sana-sini. Nuansa rock dalam album ini serba tanggung, karena tidak terlalu keras, juga tidak terlalu pelan. Dalam album ini, Bon Jovi berkolaborasi dengan 2 musisi country, yaitu Big & Rich dan Le-Ann Rimes. Freedom is the theme.

"Artistic freedom is what made this record possible," says Jon Bon Jovi. "Musical freedom to explore and emotional freedom to express what was in our hearts."

The result of that dynamic freedom is Lost Highway, an album Jon describes as "a Bon Jovi record influenced by Nashville."

"I've been going to Nashville since 1991," Bon Jovi explains. "Nashville is all about songs and songwriters. If you're someone like me who loves songs and hanging out with songwriters, Nashville is the place. I thrive on that feeling and I'm inspired by that creative ambience."

The result, a haunting set of 12 new and original sounding songs, is a stunning, multi-layered look into the nature of love and life in all its glory. Love, like life, is lost, found, forgotten and reclaimed in this collection.

The moods are many, but the core feeling is pure Bon Jovi.

"Writing this record with Jon was deeply cathartic," says Richie Sambora, who collaborated on ten of the songs. "I was going through emotional changes that were new for me. An ailing father. A painful divorce. The start of a new chapter in my life. I poured everything I had into this project, every last bit of soul at my command."

"For over twenty years now," Jon explains, "Richie and I have been close collaborators. Even when our songs create fictional stories, they reveal our states of mind. To a large degree, Lost Highway focuses on the light that love brings. When you shine the light on love, you see the chinks in the armor. You see every crevice, every crack. And that's all right, which is what a song like 'Everybody's Broken' is all about."

Adding to the classic Jon Bon Jovi/Richie Sambora collaboration are the collective contributions of others.

The journey was overseen by two celebrated producers.

The first, John Shanks, is, according to Jon, "practically the fifth member of the band." Shanks' credits include Bon Jovi's 2005 Grammy Award- winning album, Have a Nice Day. The second, Dann Huff, one of Nashville's superstar producers, has enjoyed major successes with most of country music's biggest names, including Keith Urban and Rascal Flatts.

"The flow between the two production styles," adds Jon, "was natural and smooth. In fact, the entire creation of the album is as free as the open road."

"I look at Lost Highway as a diary of a period of time," says Richie. "It was a profound time - profound because we're rediscovering the simple freedom and fun of writing songs. We went for honesty and intimacy. And even though an apparent love song like 'Seat Next to You' is put in a romantic girl/boy setting, I was thinking about me and my dad. I was thinking how, no matter what happens, a son will always have a special place seated next to his father."

"When I sing 'I Love This Town,'" Jon explains, "I'm obviously talking about Nashville. Nashville is the spirit behind this energy and relaxed musical backdrop. But I'm also talking about every town where open-hearted creative energy is nourished and encouraged. That's Chicago, that's Memphis, that's London, or that's Red Bank, New Jersey. Starting out some twenty-five years ago, we grew up on the belief that great songs were the bottom line. That great songs marked memories not only for us as writers but for the audience that listened to them. Those songs were the backbone of this whole crazy music business. Lost Highway took us to a place where we could renew that belief. I believe this record has taken us back to basics - where good stories are set to good music."

Sambora sees significance in the title.

"I'm also a traveler on that Lost Highway," he says. "It's scary because it's unknown, but it's also comforting because it's leading to exciting new places. In one song Jon writes, 'In my rear view mirror my life is getting clearer.' And another song says, 'There's a whole lot of leaving going on.' Sure, there's some regret. There are tears all over this record. But there's also joy and plenty of hope, as well as the anticipation of what's to come when you start another chapter in life. In the end, there's the knowledge that Lost Highway, is a continuation on that journey."

Lost Highway is Bon Jovi's tenth studio album since the band formed in the early eighties. One hundred and twenty million albums and 2500 concerts in over 50 countries later, Bon Jovi is enjoying the greatest popularity in their history.
